Is there a plague outbreak in Irkutsk?

No plague case has been officially confirmed. A laboratory worker at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Institute died on 2 October 2026 after severe pneumonia. Rospotrebnadzor gives the cause as “pneumonia of undetermined etiology” and denies plague. WHO says laboratory testing is underway.

Was there a lab leak at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Institute?

It is unconfirmed. Media reported that the worker broke a tube of live bacteria while collecting samples around 25 September. Rospotrebnadzor and the institute's commission say no accident and no biosafety breach took place.

How many people are in quarantine?

About 197 contacts were identified on 2 October and 189 of them were hospitalised. By 5 October, 60% had completed observation. No current headcount has been published.

Has anyone else fallen ill?
